How do I get out of my comfort zone?

How many times have you said you'll do something but you don't know how to start?

You try to upskill and learn something new, set up a new workout routine or follow a new diet but suddenly…

You start feeling uncomfortable.

You find it hard to stick to it after a week.

You feel stuck and you don't know how to go about it.

Procrastination pops up at the very last minute and the quality of your work goes south.

Growth is a natural process.

That uncomfortable feeling is a sign to keep going, not a sign to stop and limit your growth.

Getting out of your comfort zone is uncomfortable.

Doing something new is uncomfortable.

Changing your old beliefs is uncomfortable.

These are all signs that you are growing and you are on the right track.

Why do you feel uncomfortable in the first place?

70% of your identity is formed by the age of seven. The neural pathways created when you were young produced a playbook that helps you filter approximately 2 million bits of information per second, for each event.

By filtering this information, your mind is working both for you and against you.

Firstly, it is doing you a favour by sorting the information that might otherwise cause sensory overload.

However, this also limits the choices you make in life because it deletes, distorts and generalises the information for you.

For example, past experiences and beliefs established by your parents and other caregivers may have affected your self-esteem as a child.

As we grow, and without realising, attitudes and beliefs like these hold us back significantly.

The program that’s running in your unconscious mind tells you that you can’t do better, you’re not good enough, that you can't succeed. You think you are in control but really, your unconscious mind is in control.

These experiences and the beliefs of those around you have impacted how you think and who you are today, but the truth is you are not limited by your past.

Your beliefs become your destiny so it is important that you reframe them.

What can you do?

You can embrace the discomfort and take ACTION now!

When you fight for your limitations you get to keep them, which means you don’t grow.

You can remove these limitations and eliminate your negative belief system through taking action.

Because you grow through action. You are rewarded when you take action.

Sure, it will be uncomfortable and it will take effort. But by taking the first step you will come closer to achieving your goals, and in time, your ideal life.

And the most important place to start is your language, because when you shift your language from “I’ll stop because I feel uncomfortable,” to “I’ll keep going because I’m growing.”, you create a significant and lasting change in your life that your future self will thank you for.
