New year, new me: What is a life coach, really?

Writer's picture: Rebekah KingRebekah King

Recently, I had the privilege of being one of nine life coaches featured in The Advertiser, Adelaide’s leading newspaper, to share what we do and how much our services cost.

The article, written by rookie journalist Ruby Stewart, was published under the rather naïve headline: “New year, new me: The whopping life coach price tag revealed.”

Was I surprised? Not at all. Many people still misunderstand the value of working with a life coach. They assume they should be able to ‘figure it out themselves’ or dismiss it as an ‘unnecessary expense.’

But here’s a more insightful question: “What’s the cost of not getting help?”

The costs might be more than financial.

  • The cost to your mental, physical, or emotional health.

  • The cost to your relationships - separation or divorce, perhaps not seeing your kids every day.

  • The cost to your career - missed opportunities, or even losing your job.

  • And maybe most importantly, the cost to your self-worth.

Because the article was published on The Advertiser’s subscription platform, I wanted to share the key points I provided to the writer with you here. My hope is that it gives you a fresh perspective or helps you in some way.

1. Please provide your personal details.

Hi, my name is Rebekah King. I’m 45, based in Adelaide, SA, and am the co-founder of Moonbeam Monday Training + Coaching. My business partner, Yvonne, is also my Mum! Known as The Brain Changers, we work with people across Australia and globally through online coaching sessions and events, as well as workplace training and coaching. We also run in-person events to inspire real transformation.

2. In your own words, what does 'life-coaching' mean to you?

Life-coaching is about helping people reconnect with their true selves, make aligned decisions, and create a life they truly want. It’s about shifting mindset to find clarity, confidence, and connection. As The Brain Changer, I believe when you change your mind, you change your life, and we all need a little help along the way. Coaching is the catalyst for that transformation.

3. What area of life-coaching do you specialise in?

I specialise in helping people find clarity in what’s most important to them, the confidence to ask for what they want and need, and connection with like-minded people so they feel a sense of belonging. When we work together, we shift the chronic anxiety that so many people live with, aligning their actions with their values, so they can finally live a life that feels purposeful.

4. How much does an average life-coaching session with you cost?

Meaningful transformation takes time, so I work with people over an extended period rather than offering one-off sessions. Our Mind Masters Collective starts at $97/month, providing group coaching, connection, and tools to create lasting change. For those seeking deeper, personalised support, private coaching packages tailored to individual goals are also available. I encourage people to view coaching not as a cost but as an investment in themselves - an opportunity to create the life they truly want. The real question is, what is the cost of staying stuck and not taking inspired action?

5. What led you to becoming a life coach?

After living with severe depression and anxiety for over 20 years and being told it was something I’d have to “learn to live with,” by medical professionals, I discovered the life-changing power of retraining my brain. The result? No more depression or anxiety! By addressing the root cause rather than relying on quick fixes, I gained clarity and found my purpose. That transformation sparked a passion to help others do the same – turn ‘survive’ into ‘thrive’!

6. How could life-coaching benefit someone's wellbeing and help them achieve goals?

Working with the right coach helps you clear mental clutter, aligns actions with values, and fosters accountability. With a neuro-linguistics programming (NLP) practitioner - as I am - we learn how our brain works… why we think, say and do the things we do, how it impacts us, and how to change what isn’t working well. When we feel clear on our direction in life, confident in our abilities, and connected to the right support, we unlock parts of ourselves we often hide out of fear of judgement. The results are truly life-changing, offering a powerful way to achieve lasting change in every area of life.

7. What steps can someone take to make 2025 their best year yet?

We recommend following our B.R.A.I.N. Blueprint™, which looks like this:

  1. Believe you can – Challenge limiting beliefs and trust in your potential.

  2. Rediscover your values - Get clear on what truly matters to you.

  3. Address the root cause – Uncover what’s holding you back and release it.

  4. Identify your purpose – Align your goals with your passions.

  5. Nurture your mindset – Build habits that support long-term success.

Change your mind, change your life – 2025 can be the turning point, if you want it enough.

And if all that sounds overwhelming, that’s what I’m here for.

8. What is your favourite part of being a life coach?

Watching the breakthrough moments is incredible – it’s often like seeing the penny drop. The energy shifts completely! Whether it’s a new sense of clarity, asking for what they deserve, or reconnecting with their values, each shift creates a profound and positive effect in their life, and those around them. Knowing I’ve helped someone change their mind - and their life - is the most rewarding feeling in the world.
